Coach Smay enters his 2nd season as the Head Coach of the DuBois men’s basketball team.  In Smay’s first season he took DuBois to the semi-final’s of the PSUAC Championship Tournament for the first time in 12 years after knocking off the #1 team in the division.  DuBois held a 15-15 record and were ranked 3rd nationally for turnovers forced per game. Smay earned the 2023-24 PSUAC Coach of the Year in his first season with DuBois.

Smay came to DuBois after a stint with Coach Joe Lombardi at IUP.  While at IUP, Smay helped lead the Crimson Hawks to their best record ever at 32-2 while also securing the PSAC Championship and being ranked #1 in the NCAA D2 poll for most of the year.  IUP hosted the Atlantic Regional Championship but were defeated by the eventual NCAA D2 National Runner-Up, West Liberty.

Prior to IUP, Coach Smay was an assistant with Clearfield High School alongside Head Coach Nate Glunt.  Smay helped Clearfield win 5 straight district championships in the 5 years that he was there.

Smay assisted Coach Jack Schenzel of Penn State Mont Alto prior to coming to Clearfield, and not only coached several USCAA National All-Americans, but also helped lead the team to the USCAA National Championship Game runner up finish, which was the best ever finish in Mont Alto history.

Smay was on staff as a graduate assistant with Coach Leonard Hamilton and the men’s basketball team at Florida State University where he also learned from Dennis Gates (University of Missouri Head Coach), Corey Williams (University of Auburn Assistant Coach), and CY Young (University of Missouri Associate Head Coach).  Smay earned his Associates Degree in Business Administration and his Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from Penn State University, and his Master's Degree in Sport Management from Florida State University.

Prior to his time at Florida State, Smay played college ball at Penn State Mont Alto after spending 5 years in the United States Marine Corps.

Smay resides in Indiana, PA with his wife Dr. Brooke Smay, and their son Easton.
