Penn State DuBois Wins "Bernie Gus Invitational" at PSNK

John Gaylor is medalist

Penn State DuBois Golf Team played their first match of their inaugural season on Thursday and walked away with their first tournament title.  The "Bernie Gus Invitational" named after the long time golf coach at PSNK was played at the Links at Spring Church and was hosted by Penn State New Kensington.  The weather was perfect for golf, sunny skies and little wind.

Four full teams were represented along with two partial teams attending the first tournament of the season.  Sophomore, John Gaylor (Clearfield Area High School) led the PSUD team with a 78 on a par 72 course to earn the medalist spot.  DuBois' John Kane (DuBois Area High School) was close behind, finishing tied for fourth with an 80.  The PSUD squad finished the day with five players in the top ten golfers.  Derek Buganza (Brockway) finished 6th with an 82, Tighe Truman (Brookville) and Owen Braun (Mechanicsburg) both posted 86's to finish tied for 9th.  Vinnie Montanari (Redbank Valley) rounded out the PSUD scoring with an 89 for 13th place out of 29 golfers.

"It was as great way to start the season and the program," said Head Coach Pat Lewis.  He added, "We had all six golfers post scores in the 70's and 80's and five golfers in the top ten.  I'm very pleased with their composure in their first collegiate golf match."   PSUD finished with a team score of 326 to start the conference season (2-0) and (3-0) overall.

PSU DuBois' next match is September 4th at Penn National Golf Course hosted by Mont Alto.
