9 Penn State DuBois wrestlers advance to day 2 of NCWA Championships

Coach Dave Hoare has to be pleased with his team's performance after day 1 of the NCWA Championships in Allen, TX.  Leading the way into the quarterfinals are Brett Himes (125), Ty Haines (157), and Logan Shirey (184); six wrestlers are alive in the wrestle backs slated to start at 9am on Friday morning.

Brett Himes advanced with a Fall and a 13-4 decision in his two bouts, Brett will face # 1 seed Tim Nordan of Liberty University in quarterfinals.  Ty Haines won by scores of 8-0 and 2-1 to meet Bailey Bischer (Grand Valley) and Logan Shirey dominated his first 2 opponents by 17-3 and 21-6 tech fall.  Logan will take on Jonathan Wiley (Montana Western). A quarterfinal win by these wrestlers will guarantee a top 6 finish and All-American honors.

Still competing in the consolation bracket are JP Hayles (141) – JP won 4-2 and lost a tough 3-2 decision; Matt Humes (157) lost his opening bout 7-1 but has bounced back winning two decisions 13-2 and 6-4SV.  John Prentice (174) won his first two matches by Fall and 6-4 before losing 13-9; Dennis Lumadue won his opening match 9-6 lost by fall in bout two and has rebounded with two falls in the wrestle back. Tim Suydan (235) lost by fall in his opening match and has won two matches in consolations. Andrew Bigley lost his opening match and recorded a fall in his consolation match.

Eliminated from competition were Joe Knarr (165) and Carl Rodgers (285); Jake Himes injured his knee in practice and was unable to compete in the championships.

Team standings have PSU DuBois in 9th place with 30.5 points; Liberty University sits in first place followed by Middle Tennessee and Central Florida Univ.
