A Big Win for the Lady Lions

A Big Win for the Lady Lions

After the disappointing loss to PSU Fayette on Tuesday night, the PSU DuBois women's basketball team had quite the chip on their shoulder.  The determination to not lose 2 in a row at home was quite evident in the warm up for Coach Lewis's team.  Coach knew that his team was better that their last showing, and he was going to make sure they played that way tonight.

The helpful 12 for 23 from the field in the first quarter was a boost, but the better one was the defense that came from the Lady Lions.  Allowing Wilkes Barre to shoot only 4 for 16 from the field in the first quarter, and forcing 7 turnovers were what fueled the fire to get DuBois to set the tempo for the night.

Wilkes Barre would eventually slow their pace, and get into their own rhythm in the second quarter.  Both teams were upping their defensive fire power, and both teams would end the second with a 4 for 19 shooting performance and 10 points.  Melody Young (Eldred, PA) and Maddie Sprankle (Johnstown, PA) would both get hot early scoring 8 apiece.  Lauren Young (Bellefonte, PA) pulled down 10 rebounds, and the DuBois Lady Lions shot a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line to end the first half.  DuBois had the rebounding lead heading into the locker room, 36-16, as well as the point lead, 41-19.

The third quarter was much the same as the second, and saw an exciting back and forth effort on both sides.  The scoring attack for DuBois was spread from starters to reserves.  Coach Lewis was able to take advantage of his deep bench as his reserves gave him a lot of quality minutes to keep DuBois running fresh.

All 10 players for DuBois scored tonight, including a double-double from Melody Young.  Melody ended the night with 10 rebounds and 12 points.  Sprankle finished with 15 points, and Lauren Young pulled down a team high 13 rebounds as DuBois defeated Wilkes Barre, 71-53.
