PSU DuBois announces the addition of Baseball and softball to athletic programs

Penn State DuBois Baseball

Baseball Season planned for 2015-2016

Penn State DuBois Athletics plans to restart the baseball and softball programs for the 2015-2016 academic year.  The Athletics Department and Admissions Office are welcoming all eligibly interested prospective student-athletes to inquire immediately about the opportunity to participate on the team starting in Spring 2016 (a "fall ball" season may be possible in Fall 2015).

Team History

Penn State DuBois last fielded a baseball team in the mid-80s and the last season for the softball program was in 1991.  Both teams began in the late 60s drawing in student-athletes mainly from DuBois and Brockway, but also attracted players from Brookville, St. Marys, Punxsutawney and many other areas.  Penn State Beaver was a heated rival and produced many memorable double-header matches either in Beaver, Pa. or at the old Showers Field in DuBois.  The campus looks forward to adding a new chapter for both programs and to revive once two proud sports at the campus.

Season and Conference Play

The team will compete against local and regional opponents in a non-conference and conference schedule. The Penn State DuBois Baseball squad will join the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) for the 2015-2016 conference season.  Approximately seven (7) double-header home dates and seven (7) double-header away dates are slated each year for PSUAC play.  The non-conference schedule will be determined later in 2015 by the head coach and athletic director.  In addition, the goal is to include additional block travel trips in tournaments or other round-robin play trips in the non-conference schedule, such as spring-break.  Depending on interest and support by the team and campus, any spring-break tournament trips will be determined later on.

The following Penn State commonwealth campuses participate in the PSUAC:

  • Beaver
  • Brandywine
  • Fayette
  • Greater Allegheny
  • Hazleton
  • Mont Alto
  • Schuylkill
  • Wilkes-Barre
  • Worthington-Scranton
  • York

Hiring a Head Coach, Assistant Coaches and Volunteers

Job announcements for the two Head Coaching positions will be made later in Fall 2014.  Assistant Coaches job announcements are planned for later in 2015.  Each Head Coach will be hired in January 2015 with the expectation to recruit for their respective teams for the 2015-2016 year.  Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches are part-time positions.  Interested candidates should check back to the University Jobs Website this fall.

Home Games at the new Showers Field

Penn State DuBois Baseball will play their home games at the new Showers Field in DuBois, PA.  The campus, City of DuBois, and DuBois Area School District are proud to announce this partnership where these Penn State student-athletes will be able to continue their participation on the collegiate-level at the brand new facility.  Plans to add a grandstand to raise the capacity of 1000 spectators at a single event is scheduled to begin in 2015.

Traditional and Non-traditional students welcome to inquire

Whether you're a current high school player, current amateur player looking to earn your college degree and participate on a team, or even a Armed Forces Veteran who previously played, the Athletics Department and Admissions Office is available to meet with prospective student-athletes and families about this great opportunity to join either team.  Athletic scholarships are not available, however, interested student-athletes and families should inquire about Academic Scholarships.  Over 38% of Penn State DuBois students in 2013-2014 received a partial scholarship, as the campus dealt over $300,000 in scholarship funds to reduce the cost of attendance of earning their world-renowned Pennsylvania State University degree.

Showcase event for potential student-athletes in Spring 2015

Later on this year, the Athletics department will announce a Baseball Showcase event for eligible baseball players to attend and workout with the head coach (and assistant coaches or volunteers possibly).  More information will be available in the near future.

Community Feedback and Support

"This is a great day for DuBois and an awesome opportunity for the students of the DuBois Area School District. Having college-level athletic opportunities for our students allows them to continue their athletic career while completing a world class education at Penn State DuBois. This collaboration between Penn State and the DuBois Area School District will only benefit through this great partnership. It's truly a win-win scenario for the district, the university and the DuBois community."

- Mark Heckman, Superintendent, DuBois Area School District

"I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am that Penn State DuBois is adding baseball and softball to the campus. Young men and women that want to continue playing a sport that they love, can still do so and further their education right here in their hometown. In addition, young adults from outside the town who like Penn State, the DuBois campus and the DuBois area can come live, study and work here for the duration of their college time. Everyone benefits, especially the students."

- John "Herm" Suplizio, City Manager, City of DuBois
